"Happened?" - shortened version of "What happened?" It's interesting because this is a question we always ask(ed) her when her cup would end up on the floor, or her baby was unwrapped from it's blanket. She asks this question frequently and repeatedly.
"No!"- Okay, so it's not new, but we went through a month or so when she didn't use this word often, and now that it's back with a vengeance, it feels like it's new...
"Sit down, baby!"- Yes, she practically yells this at her baby dolls. And yes, it's probably in the same tone of voice that we use with her...
"Sleepin"- Sometimes this is a statement, sometimes it's a question. The statement comes when she's pointing to characters in books or her baby dolls, making the observation that who/whatever it is is sleeping. The question usually comes to me, and almost always when I'm driving her to school. She'll say, "Mama sleepin?"
"Eat it"- This is usually when she's making an observation about something she wants to eat, or we're asking her to try something new ("Eat it!" in an encouraging tone of voice). Sometimes she tells her babies to "eat it." Other times, in a stronger tone of voice she'll tell her babies "Don't eat it!" Again, wonder where she hears that from?!
"Don't touch it"- This phrase came about when we put up the Christmas tree on Thanksgiving... She wanted to touch (and eat, who would've figured that?) every single ornament, so "Don't touch!" was a phrase on repeat over the past holiday weekend.
"Coming?"- This sometimes gets turned into a game: "Dada, coming?" at which point he will chase her.
Juliana loves putting on everyone's shoes. In this picture she insisted on putting on my winter boot socks and winter boots! They were much to heavy for her to walk in by herself, but she certainly tried. It reminded me of the Winnie the Pooh episode when Tigger is trying to jump to the top of the canyon and Rabbit says he needs special shoes. Before Rabbit gives Tigger the shoes, though, he fills them with nuts and bolts and screws to make them super heavy.
Juliana loves "chocolate", but it's funny, because she will eat "Candy?" as in a Hershey Kiss, or Kit Kat bar, drink chocolate milk (when we're traveling, she picks it out of the case at Sheetz), or chocolate pudding, as in this picture, but she won't eat chocolate cake?! Must be a texture thing?
In the beginning of November we headed to Lolli and Pop's house so I could give a talk at my high school alma mater about my research. On the way back home, we stopped in Winchester to grab lunch with Aunt Caitlin and Evan. Juliana loves wearing "glasses", so here she is modeling Aunt Caitlin's sunglasses. I've actually misplaced Juliana's sunglasses and haven't had a chance to look for them, so she frequently asks for Dada's glasses, and then fusses because they won't stay on her nose. But she's gotten really good at putting them on her face without poking her eyes!
When we were visiting Lolli and Pop, we tried to get a good Christmas picture of Juliana. I had the huge plans (thanks Pinterest!) to try and get a picture of her in front of the fireplace, decorated for Christmas, with a plate of cookies and milk for Santa... Yeah, Juliana wanted nothing to do with that... Instead, we got pictures of her in her "santa!" pajamas laying on the snowman placemat like it was nap time...
And the plate with Oreos for Santa and carrots for Rudolph, were eaten by Juliana instead. She decided she wasn't such a huge fan of the peppermint Oreos (whose child is this?!).
Trying to get her to sit in front of the fire, meant she laid down looking dejected...
We brought out all sorts of props: the rocking chair, this precious rocking horse, but she just would not stay still! Oh well!
When she had enough of inside picture taking, we headed outside to play in the leaves. Juliana was beyond thrilled at the neighbor's black cat and kept yelling "Kitty! Kitty cat!! Meow, Meow Meow!!" The black cat wanted to play with Juliana, but was cautious not to get too close to the unpredictable toddler! Later that week once we were home, I was driving Juliana home from day care and it was dark outside. She commented that it was "dark!" and I agreed with her. A short time later she said "dark, kitty cat" and I believe she was making the connection that the cat was black, which is a dark color like it was outside.
The cat climbed up the dogwood tree, and Juliana acted like she either wanted to climb the tree with the kitty or was going to catch the kitty when it came back down.
Still too nervous to get too close to the kitty to pet it though!
Family picture!
Reading books with Mommy.
Aunt Caitlin had a Fisher Price medical kit when she was probably 3, and we pulled it out of her closet. Juliana loves playing with it. The shot syringe reminds Juliana of the syringes we use to give her medicine sometimes, so she'll give everyone in the room some medicine. Here she is giving Teddy a shot (or medicine?).
Lolli showed Juliana how to listen to her heart, which was appropriate timing because we went to the doctor for Juliana's 18 month appointment on Monday when we got back and Juliana recognized the stethoscope.
At her 18 month appointment she was 20 lbs 6 oz, and 32 inches tall. Her weight seems to have plateaued a bit early (at least what I can tell from the growth curve), but the doctor was beyond thrilled with Juliana's ability to eat and try all sorts of new foods. The doctor told us that Juliana was the child that made other parents of 18 month olds nervous, and at that age her own daughter was only speaking 5 words! Juliana was, again, great through the shots (it's getting much harder to hold her on the table though, she's so strong!), only crying for a few seconds and then she was over it. The good and bad news is that she won't have to have shots again until she's 4 years old, I believe. Good, because she doesn't have to have shots again, bad, because I think at 4 she'll be much more aware of what's going on and it can be a bit more traumatic versus getting shots at every visit... Oh well, we've got lots of time before I have to worry about that!
One morning before school, she used a syringe (empty) to give her baby doll (one of many) medicine. Then, when I asked if the baby was sick, she laid down on the couch with the baby and was patting the baby's back.
Here she is, thrilled with the Kit Kat or "candy!" treat. I asked her to smile for the picture, and this was the cheesy face she gave me!
We made the mistake, one night before bed, of asking and telling her what to expect when Santa comes on Christmas and told her that there would be candy in her stocking... "Candy?" she perked up, and then wanted to go downstairs to get candy. There was a mini meltdown when we told her that we didn't mean right then! Oh well, she'll hear only what she wants to hear I guess! They have taught her at school: "What does Santa say?" and she'll respond (when she wants to, of course) "Ho ho ho!"
One of the hard things about winter time, is that Juliana can't always go outside. She loves to go outside. She loves to go on walks. This particular Saturday, I was at my wits in with her inside, so I bundled her up in her bibs, jacket, hat, and gloves and we headed outside. It was still too cold, and we only stayed outside for 30 minutes, but she got to ride around in her car, and then we brought a baby doll out and she "push!"-ed her baby in the car on the driveway.
She also helped me "shovel" the leaves off the step walkway and driveway. She loves to be "helpin'".
On Thanksgiving, we turned on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade so we could see the JMU Marching Royal Dukes (the lead band!). Juliana was more thrilled by the "turkey!" float that went first and kept asking to see it when JMU was playing...
Again, for the going crazy inside, we bundled Juliana up and went outside (Grandma, Bill, Mommy, Daddy, and Juliana) to shovel the driveway. In this case, Juliana wanted to eat the snow.
Rosy cheeks and runny nose from being outside!
Here's Juliana marveling at the Christmas tree we set up on Thanksgiving (again, we needed a new activity because she was driving me crazy!). Grandma and Bill got her a very special Elmo ornament on Friday, and she was/is thrilled by it.
Brian and I did our Black Friday shopping 3-7am on Friday morning, and we got a goody bag from Field and Stream that included chapstick. Juliana loves chapstick. Well, I made the following mistake: She had tried to put the lid of the chapstick on backwards and so she made a divot in the chapstick. I used my finger to push it back down. Well, then Juliana started sticking her finger in the chapstick and rubbing it on her lips, cheeks, my cheeks, and basically anyone else she could get her hands on... I guess she was imagining it was lotion? I could've intervened, but I decided to just let it go (we had enough tantrums over the long holiday weekend, thanks to some eye teeth still trying to poke their way through!). Anyway, she covered her baby doll with chapstick. I'm sure she was imagining it was lotion.
Little fingers are great for getting into that tiny tube!
Can you see the chunks of chapstick on the baby's leg and arm? She's shiny because she's all greased up. Juliana spent a long, careful time, applying chapstick to the baby. It was really quite sweet.
